How to install qemu-guest-agent on Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak)?

In this article we are going to learn the commands and steps to install qemu-guest-agent package on Ubuntu 16.10.

Quick installation of qemu-guest-agent:

Step 1: Update system:

sudo apt-get update

Step 2: Install: qemu-guest-agent

Ater updaing the OS run following command to install the packae:

sudo apt-get install qemu-guest-agent

Description:Guest-side qemu-system agent QEMU is a fast processor emulator: currently the package supports ARM, CRIS, i386, M68k (ColdFire), MicroBlaze, MIPS, PowerPC, SH4, SPARC and x86-64 emulation. By using dynamic translation it achieves reasonable speed while being easy to port on new host CPUs. . This package provides a daemon (agent) to run inside qemu-system guests (full system emulation). It communicates with the host using a virtio-serial channel org.qemu.guest_agent.0, and allows one to perform some functions in the guest from the host, including: - querying and setting guest system time - performing guest filesystem sync operation - initiating guest shutdown or suspend to ram - accessing guest files - freezing/thawing guest filesystem operations - others. . Install this package on a system which is running as guest inside qemu virtual machine. It is not used on the host.

How to install qemu-guest-agent on Ubuntu 16.10?

First of all update your system with the command:

sudo apt-get update

Above command will download the package lists for Ubuntu 16.10 on your system. This will update the list of newest versions of packages and its dependencies on your system.

After downloading the latest package list with the help of above you can run the installation process.

If qemu-guest-agent is not installed on your compter then the command 'dpkg -L qemu-guest-agent' will give followin error.

dpkg-query: package 'qemu-guest-agent' is not installed
Use dpkg --info (= dpkg-deb --info) to examine archive files,
and dpkg --contents (= dpkg-deb --contents) to list their contents.

Installing qemu-guest-agent:

After system update use the following command to install qemu-guest-agent:

sudo apt-get install qemu-guest-agent

Above command will confirm before installing the package on your Ubuntu 16.10 Operating System. If you are not already logged in as su, installer will ask you the root password. After completion of the installation you can use the package on your system.

How to uninstall/remove qemu-guest-agent from Ubuntu 16.10?

Now we will see the commands for uninstalling the qemu-guest-agent from Ubuntu 16.10. For uninstalling this package you can easily use the apt command and remove the package from Linux Operating System.

To remove the qemu-guest-agent following command is used:

sudo apt-get remove  qemu-guest-agent

Following command is used to remove the qemu-guest-agent package along with its dependencies:

sudo apt-get remove --auto-remove qemu-guest-agent

This will remove qemu-guest-agent and all its dependent packages which is no longer needed in the system.

Completely removing qemu-guest-agent with all configuration files:

Following command should be used with care as it deletes all the configuration files and data:

sudo apt-get purge qemu-guest-agent

or you can use following command also:

sudo apt-get purge --auto-remove qemu-guest-agent

Above command will remove all the configuration files and data associated with qemu-guest-agent package. You can can't recover the delete data, so, use this command with care.
